Programme : Awareness and Advocacy

Activities: Seminars/workshops, meetings, delegations, press meet counseling, radio programme, rallies & demonstrations etc.

  • 5% job reservation in civil service to PWD.
  • 1 million budget allocation for NAB from Govt. since 2008.
  • Provision of 1 to 5% of the internal income of the local Government for the empowerment of PWD’s.
  • Provisions of 50% subsidy in the means of transportations including domestic flights for PWD’s.
  • Provisions of revenue limit by 50% as a limit of income tax for PWD. The tax also been fully exempted for the assistive devices and Braille equipments.
  • Identification mark in paper notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000.
 

Programme : Capacity Building Training :

Activities: Various level of Leadership development trainings, office management trainings, proposal and report writing trainings, trainings of trainers (TOT), Facilitation training.

Major Achivements :

  • NAB local branch (Jhapa ,Kapilvastu ,Morang & Banke) run different activities on their own office building.
  • Two branches (Dang& Bardiya) are under construction of office building.
  • Kaski Branch runs a well equipped digital library at Prithivi Narayan College (P.N) in association with same college. And also run various activities by mobilizing various resources.
  • Many of the local branches conduct vocational training, Braille Literacy Class, awareness and advocacy campaign, saving and credit programme
 

Programme : Individual Enabling Training

Activities: Computer Based on the Job Training, Music training, Vocational Training, Saving Credit, Braille reading and writing, Orientation and Mobility.

Computer: NAB provides six months computer and basic secretarial training course to ten S.L.C graduate Blind and Visually Impaired persons every year in order to make them qualified in performing activities independently. The Association provides the scholarship to the selected students. Initially, the training had been supported by USC Nepal since 2000-Later, the project had been continued with the support of Action Aid Nepal from 2004 - 2008. Currently the training is being supported by the Nepal Government.

Major Achievements: 115 SLC graduates BPS persons have completed six months computer course. Many of the trainees are engaging in the job such as telephone operating, teaching, freelancer, organization management.

Music training: Music education is regarded as the suitable profession for the blind that. Music training includes singing, instruments, body language, and rhythm. This training has been running since 2001 aiming to develop music professionals among the blind adults. 8 literate and illiterate male and female were receiving the opportunity. Now 10 persons are receiving one year course since 2012 in its own training center. Many of the trained students work as musician at the Dohari Saaj (restaurant), schools etc.

Major Achievements: 90 Blind Youths have got the opportunity in the music training. Among them 56 have completed three years course. 30 are engaging in the jobs. Some are continuing the graduate course.

Vocational Training: Self-employment based vocational training is another important measure that NAB has been implementing. Since the literacy rate of the BPS people is very low, there are only limited number of BPS people engaged in various jobs and employment. Thus NAB started providing residential vocational trainings since 2010. Priority is given to the illiterate and jobless BPS people from across the country. NAB district branches are mobilized to find the needy participants who are provided with two months training package of vocation along with daily living skills (DLS), Orientation/mobility, Braille literacy and practical marketing. Bamboo craft, candle and incense making, knitting and weaving.

Saving Credit: Saving credit program is one of the most focused program of NAB for the economic empowerment of BPS person.This program includes the activities like orientation training, refresher training, saving credit management training, matching fund disbursement.

Achievement :20 branches have formed at least one saving credit group where in more than 500 BPS people are affiliated as members.

Teaching of Braille, Orientation and Mobility: NAB provides these Trainings to each music, Vocational trainee, hostel students and recently blinded persons for their independent mobility.

Achievement: some of the trainees passed their S.L.C and continuing higher education.

Braille Press: NAB has been operating Braille press since 2001. The press is mainly engaged in printing of school text books for Ministry of Education and other reference materials. NAB is now equipped with primer 100 textile graphic embosser, Braillo 400 and Braillo 200, index 4x4 and three trained staffs with the printing capacity of 1800 Braille pages per hour.

Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) and Audio Books: NAB has been recording the text books on Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY). Daisy for All Japan has provided the technical and equipment support. The service is available at the NAB central Office & in Prithivinarayan College, Pokhara. Later Daisy program in NAB has been upgraded with the support of Australian embassy. Now the nepali version books of +2, Bachelor's and Master's degree are freely available.

Scholarship: There are about 70-80 blind students completing SLC each year. NAB/NABP therefore provides scholarship to BPS college students since 1999. Mishri Devi Dhaubhadel scholarship fund is also contributing to support the blind for college education which is created by Professor Harsha Narayan Dhaubhadel in the memory of his late mother. Likewise Lion Him kanta sharma Neupane has established the scholarship fund. Recently Dr.Madan Manandhar has established scholarship fund for the children of Blind parents.

Women Empowerment: The education, health, social and economic status of BVI women is very low which has shown by various researches. Hence, NAB conducts various programmes such as seminar/workshop at national level, sensitization Campion and vocational training at grass root level through its women's committee.

Braille Equipment Bank: NAB Braille equipment bank supplies various Braille equipment and assistive devices on the basis of "no loss no gain". We import the equipments from India and china. The equipments are listed below.

Rehabilitation Programme : The Rehabilitation Programme started up in Dang and Chitawan districts in 1999 and Kapilbastu & Nawalparasi in 2005. Currently the rehabilitation program has been running in rupandehi and bardiya since 2010. The objective of the NAB/NABP rehabilitation programme is to provide education to school children and to help blind and partially sighted people to economic rehabilitation and integration in family and community. The rehabilitation is home based and of self employment type and also helps in prevention, cure and control of blindness. It also helps in medical rehabilitation to curable BPS persons & eye patients with free of cost by organizing eye camps, screening camps and hospital referrals.
The programme includes:

  • Orientation and Mobility Training.
  • Daily living skill training.
  • Braille and Abacus education.
  • Manual Dexterity skills training.
  • Pre-education of blind children.
  • Training of local resources teachers for blind children.
  • Vocational skills training.
  • Income Generation Support.
  • Counseling.

The following results have been achieved from 2010 – 2012 through Rupandhehi & Bardiya Rehabilitation Program:

  • Vocational training and interest free loan to 900 BPS persons.
  • Orientation & Mobility training to 2900 BPS persons.
  • Number of BPS children enrolled in school – 260
  • Number of BPS students received the education materials- 260
  • Number of BPS students receiving the scholarship-38
  • Number of eye operated patients- 1500
